HVN and LVN in the volume profile. Looks for the peaks and valleys in the volume profile: an HVN (high volume node) is a price with more volume than the prices above and below it, an LVN (low volume node) one with clearly less. At HVNs a lot of trading happened; the price often slows down or rotates there. The market passed through LVNs quickly; the price often turns there or runs straight through. The node gives the nearest HVN and LVN above and below the price, from yesterday’s profile or that of the last candles. The “near” output reports when a candle comes within ±x % of a chosen node. Example: “near HVN below ±0.3 %” reports when a pullback in BTC reaches yesterday’s nearest high-volume price.

Setting it in the chart
Section titled “Setting it in the chart”
In the properties, a chart shows the levels over the last 150 candles, with their names on the right. Click a level or its name, or pick it with the arrow keys: the band ±x % for the “near” output lies around it. Drag an edge of the band or type the number under “Band ±”; dots mark the candles that came that close to the level. Levels far from the price sit at the edge with an arrow.
More under Chart above the price.
Settings
Section titled “Settings”The settings appear on the right under “Properties” once you click the node on the board. Below each field you find the same explanation as here.
Profile
Section titled “Profile”Which volume profile the nodes come from.
- previous day (default): The nodes in yesterday’s volume profile. They are fixed from midnight.
- previous week: The nodes in the previous week’s volume profile, Monday to Sunday.
- previous month: The nodes in the previous month’s volume profile.
- last candles: The nodes in the profile of the last candles before the current one, as many as under “Candles”; anew on every candle.
Candles
Section titled “Candles”Only with “last candles”: how many candles the profile spans.
How many price levels above and below a node has to exceed (HVN) or undercut (LVN). With 3 and 50 levels the sample prices have a little over two HVNs and one LVN per day; with more only the clearest remain.
Price levels
Section titled “Price levels”How many levels of equal height the session’s range is split into. With 50, one level is 0.05 % high at a 2.5 % daily range; more levels rarely add accuracy because the candles themselves are coarse.
Time zone
Section titled “Time zone”The time zone in which the day, week and month begin. The default is UTC, like the exchanges’ daily candles; in Berlin that is 1:00 AM in winter and 2:00 AM in summer. With Europe/Berlin the day begins at midnight German time.
Which level the “near” output refers to. In the chart above you can also pick it by clicking its line.
- HVN above: The nearest high-volume price above the price.
- LVN above: The nearest low-volume price above the price.
- LVN below: The nearest low-volume price below the price.
- HVN below (default): The nearest high-volume price below the price.
Band ±
Section titled “Band ±”How close a candle must come to the level, in percent of the level: “near” is true as soon as the candle’s high or low reaches into the band. 0.3 means 0.3 % above and below, so with a level of $80,000 that is $240. With 0 only a candle that touches the level itself counts.
Example
Section titled “Example”A push when a pullback comes within ±0.3 % of the nearest high-volume price from yesterday below the price.
How to connect the nodes:
- Candle (Price) → Volume nodes (Price)
- Candle (High) → Volume nodes (High)
- Candle (Low) → Volume nodes (Low)
- Candle (Volume) → Volume nodes (Volume)
- Volume nodes (near) → Push (Trigger)
On the board it reads: previous day · near HVN below ±0.3 %

Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- In messages the values are called “prior day HVN above”, “prior day LVN above”, “prior day LVN below”, “prior day HVN below”.
- Warm-up with the default settings: 48 candles (this many extra candles are loaded by the replay before the value is reliable).
- Search also finds it under: hvn, lvn, volume nodes, high volume node, low volume node, volume profile, peak, valley, support, resistance.
Technical details
Section titled “Technical details”Profile as in the Volume profile node (previous session) or the Rolling profile (candles before the current one). HVN: a level with more volume than the “Reach” levels below it and at least as much as those above (at the edge as many as there are) and at least the average of all levels. LVN: a level with less volume than the “Reach” levels below it and at most as much as those above, with full levels on both sides and at most half the average. A node lies in the middle of its level. Above: above the close, below: at or below the close.
