Candlestick pattern

Bullish engulfing

  • found
This is how the node looks on the board: inputs on the left, outputs on the right.

Engulfing, hammer, doji, stars and more. Detects well-known patterns of one to three candles, such as engulfing, hammer or morning star, and reports them on the candle that completes the pattern. Only closed candles count, so a reported pattern never disappears again. On their own, candlestick patterns are weak signals; together with a level or the RSI they say more. Example: “Bullish engulfing” and “RSI below 30” reports a possible turn in the oversold zone.

  • Bullish engulfing
  • Bearish engulfing
60 hourly candles of BTC/USDT with the engulfing patterns the node reports with its default settings: a long candle engulfs the body of a small one in the other direction, rising patterns only below the average of the last 50 candles, falling ones only above it. The dot sits on the candle that completes the pattern.

The settings appear on the right under “Properties” once you click the node on the board. Below each field you find the same explanation as here.

Default: Bullish engulfing

Which pattern the node looks for. It reports it on the candle that completes it.

  • Bullish engulfing (default): A long green candle engulfs the body of a small red one before it. Seen as a sign that buyers are taking over.
  • Bearish engulfing: A long red candle engulfs the body of a small green one before it. Seen as a sign that sellers are taking over.
  • Hammer: Small body at the top with a lower wick at least twice as long as the body: the price dropped hard and was bought back.
  • Shooting star: Small body at the bottom with an upper wick at least twice as long as the body: the price rose sharply and was sold off again.
  • Doji: Open and close almost equal, the body is at most 5 % of the range: buyers and sellers are in balance.
  • Morning star: Three candles: a long red one, a small one low down, then a long green one that closes above the middle of the first. A possible turn upward.
  • Evening star: Three candles: a long green one, a small one high up, then a long red one that closes below the middle of the first. A possible turn downward.
  • Three white soldiers: Three long green candles in a row, each closing higher and in the top quarter of its range. Shows strong, steady buying pressure.
  • Three black crows: Three long red candles in a row, each closing lower and in the bottom quarter of its range. Shows strong, steady selling pressure.

Default: consider

Whether a pattern only counts after a matching move. A hammer is a turn after a decline; with the trend it only counts when the price closes below its average of the last 50 candles.

  • consider (default): Rising patterns only count when the price closes below the average of the last 50 candles, falling ones only above it. Doji and three soldiers or crows always count.
  • ignore: Only the shape of the candles counts, no matter how the price moved before.

A possible turn in the oversold zone: a bullish engulfing while the RSI is below 30.

How to connect the nodes:

  1. Candle (Price) → Candlestick pattern (Price)
  2. Candle (Open) → Candlestick pattern (Open)
  3. Candle (High) → Candlestick pattern (High)
  4. Candle (Low) → Candlestick pattern (Low)
  5. Candle (Price) → RSI (Value)
  6. RSI (RSI) → Compare (Value)
  7. Candlestick pattern (found) → AND (Signal 1)
  8. Compare (true/false) → AND (Signal 2)
  9. AND (all true) → Push (Trigger)

On the board it reads: Bullish engulfing

Body = |close − open|, long and small mean larger or smaller than the EMA 14 of the bodies; trend: close below (rising patterns) or above (falling ones) the SMA 50. Engulfing: a long body reaching beyond the open of the small one before and starting at most at its close; hammer: small body above the middle of the range, lower wick ≥ 2 × body, upper ≤ 5 % of the body; doji: body ≤ 5 % of the range; morning star: long falling body, small body below its middle, long rising body closing above its middle; three white soldiers: three long rising bodies with higher closes, each opening within the body before and closing in the top quarter of its range; the falling patterns mirrored. Opens up to a tenth of the EMA beside the previous body count as inside, because crypto trades without price gaps.
